Retinal Laser Simulation Workshop for Ophthalmology Residents
Overview by Dr. Evelyn Mensah
Over the past 15 years, intravitreal injection therapies have become extremely common in the management of diabetic retinopathy. Whilst there has been a corresponding reduction in the number of laser treatments for particularly diabetic maculopathy, ophthalmology residents have struggled to gain adequate experience in appropriate laser application. This innovative retinal laser simulation course is designed for specialist residents in ophthalmology. It is divided into two main parts.
- QUILT (Quality Improvement in Laser Training) is a simulation course created by Professor Peter Scanlon.
- Course lead and facilitator for EgSCRS: Dr Evelyn Mensah.
- Sharing of best practice and learning from each other in Ophthalmology.

Face-2-Face QUILT
Computer based laser simulation using QUILT (Quality Improvement in Laser Training)
QUILT Laser Simulation training includes:
-
Choices of laser and contact lens, laser power and spot size,
spot pattern and spacing, viewing magnification - Guidance on laser application
- Guidance on selecting appropriate treatment plans
- Discussions with peers on patient cases and appropriate treatments
02B
Face-2-Face Artificial Eyes
Practical laser simulation using the live single-shot and multi-shot retinal laser machines together with the RetiEye and photochromic laser inserts
- A downloadable QUILT installation tool is emailed to candidates in advance of the F2F laser simulation course.
- Candidates are trained using the live retinal lasers, the model eye (RetiEye) with photochromic laser insert and the fundus contact lens
